Energy Optimization for Transcritical CO2 Heat Pumps for Combined Heating and Cooling and Thermal Storage Applications

A transcritical heat pump (THP) cycle using carbon dioxide (CO2) as the refrigerant is known to feature an excellent coefficient of performance (COP) as a thermodynamic system. Using this feature, we are designing and building a system that combines a water-to-water CO2 heat pump with both hot and cold thermal storages know as Thermal Battery (TB) (Blarke, 2012). Smart and effective use of inte...

Analysis and Comparison of Two-Phase Ejector Performance Metrics for R134a and CO2 Ejectors

Two-phase ejectors have been gaining increased attention in recent years due to their ability to directly improve the COP of the cycle. Of common interest in two-phase ejector studies is how the ejector improves cycle COP. However, less emphasis is often given to the performance of the two-phase ejector itself. The amount of COP improvement offered by an ejector cycle is very strongly influence...

Analysis of a Two Phase Flow Ejector For Transcritical CO2 Cycle

This paper presents the analysis of a two phase flow ejector for the transcritical CO2 cycle. A detailed simulation model of a two phase flow ejector was developed. A controllable ejector expansion device was designed, constructed, and installed in a transcritical CO2 experimental air conditioning system. System-level experimental results were obtained at different operation conditions and vari...

investigating the feasibility of a proposed model for geometric design of deployable arch structures

deployable scissor type structures are composed of the so-called scissor-like elements (sles), which are connected to each other at an intermediate point through a pivotal connection and allow them to be folded into a compact bundle for storage or transport. several sles are connected to each other in order to form units with regular polygonal plan views. the sides and radii of the polygons are...

Design and Setup of the Micro-Turboexpander Transcritical CO2 System

The relative low COP of transcritical CO2 systems caused by the throttle valve limited the further development. The replacement of a throttle valve with a turboexpander, an ejector or a vortex tube is leading to the way for improving the COP of a transcritical CO2 system. In this paper, a transcritical carbon dioxide refrigeration cycle with different expansion devices was analyzed theoreticall...
